You Rank, They Don't Click: What Google's AI Summaries Mean for Singapore SME Search in 2026

You still rank on page one. Your traffic is still falling. For a growing number of Singapore SMEs, both of those things are now true at once, and the reason sits at the very top of the search page: the AI summary that answers the question before anyone reaches your link.

This is the quiet rewrite of search, and it changes the maths of SEO. Ranking well used to mean getting the click. Increasingly, it means being read out loud by Google and never visited at all. If your entire search strategy still assumes a ranking equals a visitor, you are optimising for a page that no longer behaves the way it did.

The number that should worry you

A Pew Research Center analysis of real browsing data from 900 U.S. adults, published in July 2025, found that when a Google search returned an AI-generated summary, users clicked a traditional search result in just 8% of visits. When no AI summary appeared, they clicked nearly twice as often, in 15% of visits. Clicks on the sources cited inside the summary itself were rarer still, happening in only 1% of visits (Pew Research Center, 2025).

Read that again. The presence of an AI summary roughly halves the chance that anyone clicks through to a website at all. And these summaries are not rare. In the same study, around one in five Google searches produced one, rising to more than half of all searches that were ten words or longer, and 60% of searches phrased as a question. The longer and more specific the query, the more likely the searcher never leaves the results page.

For an SME, that is precisely the traffic you want most. The ten-word, question-shaped searches are the high-intent ones: "best halal caterer for corporate events in the CBD", "reliable aircon servicing company near Tampines". Those are the searches most likely to be answered by an AI summary, and most likely to end without a click.

Why "we rank fine" is now a trap

The dangerous part is that your ranking report still looks healthy. You are position three for your keyword. The dashboard is green. But the position-three link now sits below an AI-generated answer that satisfies most searchers before they scroll. The ranking is real; the visit it used to guarantee is not.

This is why traffic can fall while rankings hold. Owners see the decline, assume the site is broken or the ad spend is underperforming, and pour money into the wrong fix. The actual leak is structural: the search page changed shape, and the SEO strategy did not change with it.

What SEO has to do now instead

The response is not to abandon SEO. It is to update what "good SEO" means in a search page that answers questions itself. Three shifts matter most.

1. Get cited, not just ranked. When a searcher does not click, the win is being the source the AI summary quotes and names. That requires the same fundamentals that always mattered, clear authoritative content and clean technical structure, aimed at a new goal: being the answer, not merely a link near it. This is the overlap between traditional SEO and the newer discipline of getting surfaced by AI, and it is why we now treat them as one service in our Search Visibility (SEO and GEO) work rather than two.

2. Win the searches AI can't fully answer. AI summaries are strong at general, factual questions. They are weak at "which specific local business should I trust, and why". Content that demonstrates real expertise, local relevance, pricing clarity, genuine reviews and case detail still earns the click, because the summary cannot manufacture it. Building that depth is the job of a proper content engine, not a one-off blog post. See our AI Content Engine for how that is run as an ongoing system.

3. Convert the visitors you do get. If fewer people click, every click that lands must work harder. A site that ranks, earns the rarer visit, then loses the person to a slow page or an unclear next step is leaking at the most expensive point. Tightening that path is what our Conversion Website Sprint is built to fix.

The honest first step

Before changing anything, you need to know how exposed you already are. Which of your key searches now trigger an AI summary? Are you cited inside it, buried below it, or absent entirely? Most owners have never actually looked, because the ranking report never showed them this layer.

That is exactly what our AI Visibility Report and GEO Audit is for: a clear read on how your business shows up in AI-driven search, where the summaries are intercepting your traffic, and what to do about it in priority order. Search did not stop mattering. It stopped rewarding the businesses that assumed it would never change.
