Found on the Map: Why Most Singapore SMEs Miss the 'Near Me' Customer Who Is Ready to Buy
A customer three streets away pulls out their phone and types "accountant near me" or simply asks their maps app out loud. In the next few seconds Google decides which three businesses appear in the local pack, the boxed set of listings that sits above the regular blue links. If your Singapore SME is not one of those three, you did not lose the sale in a pitch. You lost it before the customer ever knew you existed.
This is the quietest gap in local growth, and the numbers show just how wide open it still is.
The gap: ready buyers are searching, and most SMEs are invisible
Start with demand. Close to half of consumers, 46 percent, say they "always" or "often" add "near me" to their local search queries, and 73 percent of local searches begin on a mobile device, according to BrightLocal's 2026 Consumer Search Behavior study. These are not idle browsers. The same research found that 75 percent of consumers decide which business to use within 30 minutes, and 28 percent decide in under five minutes. The window to be chosen is tiny, and it opens the moment someone searches.
Now the supply side, which is where the opportunity hides. Just 35 percent of small and medium businesses have a Google Business Profile at all, per BrightLocal's SMB Marketing Report (2025). Read that again. Nearly two in three local businesses have not claimed the single free listing that decides who appears on the map. The demand is overwhelming. The competition for it is thinner than almost anyone assumes.
And the map pack is not a sideshow. Backlinko's 2024 analysis of local search found that 42 percent of searchers click on a Google map pack result for local queries. For a business that depends on nearby customers, those three slots are frequently the whole game.
Why the gap exists
It is rarely laziness. It is usually one of three quiet failures.
The profile is unclaimed or half-finished. A listing with no categories, no hours, no photos, and no description tells Google it has little to rank. Google's own guidance is explicit: complete, accurate information is what makes a profile eligible to appear for relevant searches. An empty profile is a closed shop with the lights off.
The business information does not match everywhere else. Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone number against other sources across the web. When your address reads one way on your website, another on a directory, and a third on an old listing, that inconsistency erodes the trust signal that local ranking depends on. BrightLocal's research identifies Google Business Profile factors as having the single biggest impact on local pack rankings.
The profile is claimed, then abandoned. No new photos, no posts, no responses to reviews, no updated hours over the holidays. Google rewards freshness and activity because they signal a business that is actually open and attentive. A dormant profile slowly loses ground to a competitor who keeps theirs alive.
The AI twist most SMEs have not noticed
The map pack is no longer the only place "near me" gets answered. Buyers increasingly ask AI assistants for local recommendations, and the accuracy there is shaky. Research cited by BrightLocal found that only 68 percent of business contact information surfaced by ChatGPT and Perplexity matches the details on Google Business Profiles, and roughly one in five ChatGPT users switch back to Google to verify a local answer. A clean, consistent, well-maintained profile is now doing double duty: it feeds the map pack, and it feeds the AI answer that increasingly sits in front of it. Getting recommended by name in those answers is the newer discipline we covered in our piece on why AI assistants leave good Singapore SMEs out of the answer, and it starts from the same foundation.
How to close it
Winning the local pack is not a mystery. It is a checklist applied consistently.
- Claim and fully complete the profile. Correct categories, exact hours, service areas, a genuine description with the terms customers actually search, and real photos of the premises, team, and work. Completeness is eligibility.
- Make your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere. On the website, on every directory, on every social profile. One canonical version, enforced across the web, so Google sees one business, not three.
- Keep it alive. Fresh photos, updated hours around public holidays, short posts about offers or news, and prompt, specific replies to every review. We unpacked why the review side matters in the review-response gap.
- Point your website at the local intent. A page that names the neighbourhoods and services you cover gives Google the on-page signals that support your local organic rankings, which sit right below the map pack.
The bottom line
The demand for "near me" is already there, every day, from customers minutes away who are ready to decide in minutes. The reason most Singapore SMEs do not capture it is not budget or competition. It is an unclaimed or neglected listing. With nearly two-thirds of businesses still not even on the map, the window is unusually open, and it rewards whoever shows up properly first.
